How to Clean a Hybrid Mattress

Hybrid mattresses give you a fabulous night’s sleep, but do you know how to deep clean a mattress at home so that it looks and feels good for years to come?

In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how to clean your hybrid mattress, including:

  • How often should you clean
  • A step-by-step care guide
  • Our top mattress care tips.

Let’s get into it:

How Often Should You Clean a Hybrid Mattress?

Cleaning your mattress regularly is essential because nasties like dead skin, dust mites, and dirt build up over time. It’s recommended that you clean your hybrid mattress at least twice a year and more frequently if you suffer from allergies.

We’d recommend cleaning the mattress with a soft brush or hoover every couple of months.

If you have pets that sleep on your bed, you might want to do more frequent cleanings.

Can You Use a Steam Cleaner on a Mattress?

Steam cleaners are great for many household chores, but they’re a big no-no when it comes to cleaning hybrid mattresses.

The moisture from the steam can seep deep into the layers, damaging the foam and coils and allowing mould to grow.

We’ve got lots of tips on how to care for and clean your hybrid mattress without using a steam cleaner. It’s not difficult and doesn’t require much effort, so let’s get started!

Step 1: Use a Soft Brush and Vacuum for Surface Dirt

Remove all the bedding and use a soft brush or the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner to gently clean the mattress's surface.

Pay particular attention to the seams and crevices where dust and debris can build up.

Regularly vacuuming every few months helps keep dust mites and allergens at bay.

Step 2: Use Mild Detergent to Clean Liquid Spills

If a fresh liquid spills on your mattress, it’s important to act fast to prevent the stain from setting. Blot the spill with a dry cloth to soak up as much liquid as possible, then use a damp cloth with a small amount of mild detergent to clean the area.

Don’t soak the mattress with a lot of liquid, as too much moisture can damage the internal components and make it hard to dry.

If the worst has happened and there are dried-on liquid stains, you can still spot-clean them:

  • Apply a small amount of cleaning solution such as a gentle, bleach-free laundry detergent or enzyme cleaner to a clean cloth.
  • Gently blot the stain with the cloth
  • Get a different clean cloth and dampen it with cold water
  • Again, gently blot the area with the cold water cloth.
  • Repeat the steps if necessary until the stain has gone

The aim is to use only a small amount of cleaning solution on a cloth, and again, don’t soak the mattress.

Depending on the type of stain, you can use different cleaning solutions. For blood, sweat, and urine stains, a commercial enzyme cleaner will probably give the best results. For urine stains, mix equal parts of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle, but don’t over-soak the area. Leave for 10-15 minutes to let the vinegar work its magic.

Vinegar is a great odour neutraliser and breaks down the uric acid in urine, which can help prevent stains from forming. If you don’t have these things to hand, then just the foamy suds from a mix of dish soap and water will also work in a pinch.

Step 3: Let Your Mattress Air Dry

After cleaning, it’s important to let your mattress air dry completely to prevent mould and mildew growth. You can speed this up by placing the mattress in a well-ventilated area or near a fan.

Occasionally airing out your mattress every few months can also keep your mattress fresh.

Step 4: Apply Baking Soda

Follow this step only once you’re sure your mattress is completely dry. Apply a thin layer of baking soda over the whole surface of the mattress to neutralise any remaining odour.

Leave the baking soda on the mattress for a few hours, or as long as possible. Open your bedroom windows to increase airflow, too.

Step 5: Vacuum Again

Once you’ve left the baking soda for a few hours, vacuum it up using the upholstery attachment. Baking soda is cheap, and it really works to neutralise those odours, so after you’ve vacuumed it off you can enjoy your clean, fresh-smelling mattress.

Special Care Instructions for Hybrid Mattresses with Cooling Gel-Infused Foam Layers

Hybrid mattresses such as the Cooleze™ Hybrid Original Mattress and the Cooleze™ Hybrid Deluxe Mattress have a cooling gel-infused foam layer designed to keep you cool while you sleep. Mattresses made with these special materials need slightly different care to maintain their cooling effectiveness and longevity:

  1. Avoid Excess Moisture: Because cooling gel-infused foam is sensitive to moisture, it’s important to avoid over-wetting the mattress as this can cause the foam to break down and could reduce its cooling properties.
  2. Use Only Gentle Cleaners: To spot-clean stains, use a mild laundry detergent or dish soap mixed with water. Avoid harsh chemicals like bleach, vinegar, or ammonia, as they can damage the foam and reduce the cooling effect. Always blot the stain gently and avoid harsh scrubbing.
  3. Avoid Direct Sunlight: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can damage the foam and reduce the cooling gel's effectiveness. Airing your cooling hybrid mattress is a good idea, but do it in a shaded, well-ventilated area.

Other Mattress Care Tips

A hybrid mattress is a significant investment, so there are many other things you can do to keep it clean and extend its lifespan:

  1. When first unpacking your new mattress, allow it to be aired while it expands to freshen and remove any aroma from storage and packaging.
  2. Use a washable mattress protector to prolong the lifespan of your mattress and prevent stains on the soft knit stretch fabric cover. If you have kids, some mattress protectors are waterproof in case of accidents.
  3. Rotate your mattress head to toe once every month, but please don’t flip an eze™ mattress. We designed our hybrid mattresses so that you sleep with the temperature-regulating and/or memory foam layer on top—that’s one less chore to do!
  4. Don’t roll or fold the mattress once unrolled as it can damage the internal components.
  5. Avoid sitting on the edge of the bed if you can, as it places undue strain on the springs at the edges and can damage the mattress border.
  6. Wash your bedding regularly. A weekly hot wash of your sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers can kill dust mites and help keep your mattress fresh. Always check your bedding’s care instructions so you don’t shrink or fade them in the wash! Check if your pillows are washable, and give them a wash too.
  7. Give your mattress a full airing every week or so between putting on new bed linen. Leave the sheets off for a few hours, as the circulating air helps remove mattress moisture and eliminate lurking dust mites and allergens.

Regular care and proper cleaning are the key to maintaining the comfort and durability of your hybrid mattress. By following the steps and advice in this article you can enjoy a fresh, clean mattress and wake up feeling refreshed for years to come.
