A gel mattress is a type of hybrid mattress with cooling gel integrated into memory foam to regulate temperature. There are two main types of gel mattresses:

1. A mattress that has a gel pad layer on top or beneath the mattress layers.
2. A memory foam mattress that has small gel particles or beads infused into the layer.

According to a study from Sleep Foundation, cooling hybrid mattresses are the best for temperature regulation, thanks to their use of metal coils, which improve airflow. 

Most gel memory foam uses a thermal gel that’s cool to the touch or a phase-changing gel that will liquefy when the temperature rises to draw heat away from the sleeper.
